H.4530 would consolidate South Carolina’s school districts so there is only one district per county. Under the current arrangement South Carolina has nearly twice as many school districts as it does counties. This is an outdated system that drives up educational costs by needlessly duplicating school district administrative services within counties. A 2005 study mandated by the General Assembly found that reducing the number of school districts to one per county could save the state more than $21 million annually.
