H.3056 would require that before any individual can be employed by a law enforcement agency in South Carolina he must undergo a 10 year criminal background check. It would be governmental overreach to require this of a private employer but it is a reasonable safety measure for public law enforcement agencies. Considering the wide latitude law enforcement officers are given by the law in making determinations to use force (even up to deadly force), every precaution should be taken to ensure that individuals with a history of questionable judgment or even violence aren’t being hired as law enforcement.
