Ahead of the 2023-24 legislative session, SCPC has been working on a scorecard to evaluate state legislators on our top issues such as tax relief, school choice, government transparency, and legal reform.
In an effort to make this project a success, we asked for the input of our membership. A couple months ago we sent out a brief survey asking readers for their opinions on different issues affecting South Carolina. Today we wanted to share some of the results.
Transparency
- 86% said it is very important for government meetings to be livestreamed to the public
- 93% said it is very important to bring more transparency to earmark spending
- 93% strongly agreed or agreed that South Carolina government needs to be more transparent
Legal reform
- 86% strongly agreed or agreed that South Carolina’s legal system needs reform
- 94% strongly agreed or agreed that lawyer-lawmakers should not present cases in front of judges they helped to the bench
- 91% strongly agreed or agreed that liability in civil cases should be based on fault, not ability to pay
Choice
- 96% said it is very or somewhat important that South Carolina expand free market healthcare options
- 80% strongly agreed or agreed that South Carolina should expand school choice
- 76% said the Education Scholarship Account proposal (ESA) is very important or somewhat important to them
Other
- 80% strongly agreed or agreed that SCPC should do more to hold legislators accountable for their votes
- 80% strongly agreed or agreed that it is important for South Carolina to further cut taxes
- 68% said they were very or somewhat confident that our elections will be conducted fairly and accurately, after the passage of bi-partisan election integrity reforms earlier this year
Thank you to everyone who took the survey and left comments (we read them all!) Your input is greatly appreciated. We will have more to present on the legislative scorecard next year.
