When the state Supreme Court declared Greenville County’s annual road maintenance fee invalid last year, it triggered a wave of lawsuits challenging similar charges in other municipalities and counties. Instead of letting those cases play out, lawmakers are pushing a bill to retroactively change the definition of fee, which would effectively crush the lawsuits and deny residents the chance of getting refunded millions of dollars.
