WHAT WOULD THE FOUNDERS DO?
In compiling our guide to the year’s legislation, The Best & Worst of the General Assembly, we found ourselves asking a simple but important question about many of the bills: what would our nation’s founders think about them? The Founding Fathers didn’t simply want to throw off one government and exchange it for another; they wanted to establish a freer nation, a nation where government intrusion and regulation didn’t become an overbearing presence in citizens’ lives. With that in mind, we’ve taken a closer look at some of the bills and put them in the context of our founders’ thought.
Every week, we’ll post another analysis based on the Founders’ perspective. What would Thomas Jefferson say about a bill allowing people to carry firearms into restaurants? What would George Mason say about a law barring police officers from confiscating cameras during an arrest? What would the framers of the U.S. Constitution do about Medicaid expansion?
